With Season 2 Nearing Its Finale SYFY’s Resident Alien Has Definitively Established Itself As A Sci-Fi Force Of Nature Diana Marsh, September 11, 2022 RESIDENT ALIEN — “Harry, A Parent” Episode 213 — Pictured in this screengrab: (l-r) Corey Reynolds as Sheriff Mike Thompson, Elizabeth Bowen as Deputy Liv Baker — (Photo by: SYFY) With its warm endearing characters, fantastical storylines, and balance of comedic and dramatic moments, Resident Alien is in a galaxy all of its own. Season 1 sees the Alien (or Goliath or something unpronounceable, there’s a lot going on here) crash land on Earth to presumably kill all humans but in the meantime, he gets caught up in a side hustle of becoming Dr Harry Vanderspeigle after taking on the Dr’s form (who was murdered right before Harry part 2 arrived) to blend in with the community. Harry was also separated from his ship after the crash and all he wants to do is find where gravity parked it and leave before more of his kind come to earth and kill everyone. Why does first contact always lead to death and or dismemberment? An accident leads to Harry’s head nurse Asta (Sara Tomko) finding out who Harry really is, and with the help of her bff D’Arcy (Alice Wetterlund) and adoptive Dad Dan (Gary Farmer) who, along with the Mayor’s son Max (Judah Prehn), have figured it out as well, try to guide Harry into becoming a decent human and let’s just say the struggle is real. While normal life things life are going on in Patience, a psychotic government agent along with her partner (who’s more of a hostage really) shows up in town after confirming something alien in nature crashed in the area. Harry is able to get his ship back from the agency but at a great cost, mostly to Sheriff Thompson (Corey Reynolds) and Deputy Liv Baker (Elizabeth Bowen) memories of stumbling on Harry’s real identity. It’s ok, they’ll… make more? We’ve got a botched murder (the real Harry was killed in S1 but in S2 when Harry the 2nd is seen in NYC it becomes problematic for the really bad guys), Harry becomes an adoptive Dad to a hangry baby alien that he is actually the father of, Asta finds her real mother’s address only for her first contact to be everything she wasn’t prepared for, D’Arcy meets the man of her dreams and loses him while training to go back to the Olympics, Sheriff Mike gets real competitive like, with a neighboring police department over a homicide that technically happened in their jurisdiction but to protect the real killer’s identity (motive was self-defense) the crime scene magically changed locations with the help of one gassed-up Judy (Jenna Lamia), and a celebrity conspiracy theorist visits Patience at the insistence of Deputy Baker and begins hunting Harry. Oh, we also find out that it’s not Harry’s people who are coming to incite mass genocide, it’s the Grey Aliens (as opposed to the other murderous alien race the Alpha Draconians, and again, why does everything want to kill us? Are we good with ketchup? I mean, damn) but at least we get a great cameo from George Takei out of it. The next 2 episodes will define what we’re getting ourselves into with season 3 and I promise you the best reveals are yet to come.
