Uncork’d Entertainment’s 5 Galaxies Out December 10th 2019 Is Maybe 3 Galaxies Too Many Diana Marsh, November 29, 2019December 10, 2019 (Eye twitch) Sigh…photo courtesy of Uncork’d Entertainment. I don’t understand why it says worlds. Five Galaxies, out December 10th, is a jaunt through the space/time continuum itself, hitting up 5 different times in humanity’s future existence and mapping out 5 very different life stories of people battling for survival while new technology is constantly being developed to enslave, control, exterminate, and then ultimately revive the human race. So ok, it’s creative, it’s interesting, and has a few notable actors on its roster but that’s as far as I can go with the compliments. Here’s why. First of all, the movie isn’t segmented into 5 Galaxies, it’s divided into 5 different stories of human survival in the not so distant future. We know this because the movie is divided up chronologically, starting in the year 2056 in Palm Springs, CA. That’s not a place far far away, it’s right here on Earth, and quite lovely this time of year. The stories continue through Paramus, NJ up to NYC, New York in the year 2150. Each story is about 15 minutes long or so and encompasses everything from involuntary population control to an all-out nuclear war complete with a dystopian period and finishing in a highly functioning technology wonderland of epic proportions complete with bounty hunters and really bad guys. Yet, the overall theme seems to focus on the question of what would you do if you had to make the ultimate sacrifice to help save humanity, almost like you’re playing the most severe Choose Your Own Adventure Game ever, but the home version. Intense, but weird. Overall, the movie is ok. The storylines are interesting, the character interactions, for the most part, flow well and the visuals are good, but when you put them all together things come out choppy and artificial. Each story seems to struggle with building up the level of care or concern you’d like the audience to have for the characters involved, so when the story ends, there’s a noticeable lack of urgency to know what happened to said characters after the screen goes black, especially at the ending of the movie. No ratings, no numbers, just distinct irregularities that make a veteran movie reviewer’s eye twitch. The official trailer can be see here 5 Galaxies features Pom Klementieff (Guardians of the Galaxy), Eric Roberts (The Dark Knight, “Suits”) and Neil Jackson (“Sleepy Hollow”) in a powerful profusion of science-fiction, featuring segments from such visionary filmmakers as Nelson Lee, Kristen Hilkert, Amir Reichart, Vitaly Verlov and Marc-Henri Boulier.
