The Orville Takes Sci Fi Dramatic Comedy To The Next Level Diana Marsh, September 25, 2017September 25, 2017 I think Gene would be damn proud. Imaginative, fun, thought provoking, and broad in its ambition, Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville is a refreshing take on the classic Sci Fi storyline of what life might be like in the distant future and all the ethical issues that might entail. However, along with addressing important social and interspecies issues, the storylines leave plenty of room for wit and humor, so while you’re thinking, you’re laughing, and that paves the way for discussion. The show features a rediculously talented cast including Seth MacFarlane as Captain Ed Mercer, the ship’s snarky but talented new kid on the block, Adrianna Palicki as Commander Kelly Grayson who just happens to also be Ed’s ex wife but is also an equally talented commander, along with Penny Johnson Jerald as Dr Claire Finn, Scott Grimes as Lieutenant Gordan Malloy, and more, all who add heart and wit to every episode. The first three shows alone have tackled issues such as species superiority with members of the crew being rounded up and put on display for entertainment purposes, transgender acceptance and the ethics of gender reassignment, and well, marriage, all of which has been handled with a balanced and plausible outcome. What the rest of the season has to offer is anyone’s guess, but it certainly will not be boring. With gorgeous special effects, a beautiful music score, solid storylines, and a fantastic cast that goes above and beyond, The Orville is a truly enjoyable bit of entertainment that millions of fans have fallen in love with, for good reason.
