Photo courtesy of Nerdist.com Adapted from the short story of the same name by author Joe Hill, The Black Phone is a fresh take on a very old and terrifying nightmare. Starring Ethan Hawke (The Magnificent Seven, Dead Poets Society) and directed by Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Doctor Strange) the film is set in the 1970s in a suburban Colorado town where 5 children have gone missing. Soon, child number 6 by the name of Finney Shaw disappears one afternoon and finds himself locked in the soundproof basement of a psychotic serial killer named The Grabber, with a non-working black phone hanging from one of the walls. While the phone may be a type of psychological torture, Fin soon learns he can use it to communicate with The Grabber’s past victims who try to help Fin escape. Fin also has some help from the natural world, his little sister Gwen. Gwen begins to have visions involving the kidnapping that might help lead local law enforcement to Fin before it’s too late so let’s hope she’s more accurate than, say, Miss Cleo.
