SYFY’s New Scripted Series SurrealEstate Is Amityville Horror Meets Open House TV With Savagely Fun Results Diana Marsh, July 17, 2021 Tim Rozon (Luke Roman) Center, Maurice Dean Wint (August Ripley) Stage Left and Adam Korson (Father Phil Orley) Stage Right in SYFY Channel’s SurrealEstate. No one can sell a stigmatized property quite like Luke Roman. You can’t just go in, write up the paperwork, plant your sign in the front yard, and then go about that Realtor life. You have to really look the property over, find the sweet spots in the house that create interest and really play them up, keep a reliable handyman on tap for unexpected repairs that might come up, and learn how to properly communicate with the dead, no matter what kind of mood they may be in. All in a day’s work when you deal in SurrealEstate. Tim Rozon (Luke Roman), Sarah Levy (Susan Ireland), and Savannah Basley (Zooey L’Enfant) Photo courtesy of TVLine. The series begins with The Roman Agency taking on a new realtor by the name of Susan Ireland who has an impressive track record for closing on houses that are notably difficult to sell. While Luke Roman and the rest of his staff are considered a bit shady and just generally outcasts of the realtor world, Susan needed the job and they had an opening, and really how bad could it be? Other dimensionally so. Photo courtesy of SYFY Wire All the properties have an uninvited guest of supernatural origin. Be it a hungry demonic hound, an angry spirit, or a living human with gifts they don’t understand, each home has unfinished business that needs to be dealt with before it can be sold and it takes a very specific kind of team with very specific skills to get it done, safely. You have Luke who can not only communicate with the dead but actually understands who and what he’s dealing with, August Ripley who’s steampunk-inspired inventions allow mortals to see the supernatural squatters, capture unruly spirits and destroy evil demons, Father Phil an ex-priest with research skills regarding matters of the undead like no other, and office manager extraordinaire Zooey who keeps things running smoothly. And who also hates the new kid. All in all, I think SYFY has another hit on its hands. The cast is fantastic (very fluid with their dialog and character interactions both alive and dead), the writing is really good with a great balance of humor, horror, suspense, and emotion, plus the FX are just wickedly cool. SurrealEstate is a satisfying show that doesn’t take itself too seriously but keeps the quality of content turned up to 11.
