Scottish avant-garde black metal band ASHENSPIRE Release The “Law of Asbestos” Video Terry Bunch, June 24, 2022 Scottish avant-garde black metal band ASHENSPIRE Release The “Law of Asbestos” Video Glaswegian avant-garde black metal act ASHENSPIRE have revealed a lyric video for “The Law of Asbestos”. The track is the opening salvo on their soon to be released album Hostile Architecture, which is out on July 18th, 2022 via code666. The band commented “The Law of Asbestos serves as a kind of abstract to all of Hostile Architecture, a thesis statement at the opening of the record. It’s reflecting specifically on social housing as implemented in the UK and afield – a series of half-hearted, vanity-driven projects with little long-term investment and the cheapest materials available. Social housing is people’s lives, often the most vulnerable amongst us, and we see far too often the impact that the state and private capital’s attitude towards social housing has on those people. Finally, it invites the listener to reflect on how, at the end of it all, we are unified in how precarious our position is; how, as subjects under capital, we must demand the best possible conditions for living for all, especially those most downtrodden, as any of us are only ever three bad months from desperately needing shelter.” ASHENSPIRE debuted in 2017 on Code666 records with Speak Not of the Laudanum Quandary, a critique of British Imperialism. The new album Hostile Architecture is a commentary on the widening of the inconceivably vast wealth gap between capitalists and the working class, and growing alienation between one another. Musically the outfit create alluring and yet disturbing soundscapes which develop as the album progresses. Grounding the mood with intense dissonance and distortion, jazz influences and ethereal violin parts construct a stark contrast. The discomforting chaos emerges through contrapuntal melodies such as those used in “BÉTON BRUT”. Manipulating dynamics amid tracks, and throughout Hostile Architecture, enhances the emotional anguish of ASHENSPIRE’s powerful message. With an anguished tone, the unsettling vocal quartet in “HOW THE MIGHTY HAVE VISION” diverges significantly from the darker sounds that dominate elsewhere. Hostile Architecture sees ASHENSPIRE leaning further into avant-garde jazz tendencies and black metal dissonance in a more full realization of their own Sprechstimme. Engaging with evolving compositional styles and experimental techniques, ASHENSPIRE are cultivating exceptional music.
