NBC’s Newest Sci-Fi Drama Series Debris Offers A Fresh Take On What Earth’s First Encounter Might Look Like

Diana Marsh, March 17, 2021

Debris' Review: New NBC Alien Drama Evokes 'X-Files,' 'Fringe' - Variety

Riann Steele as MI 16 agent Finola Jones (R) and Jonathan Tucker as Federal Agent Bryan Beneventi stumbling upon some odd alien shenanigans in episode 1.

Even with only being three episodes in, NBC’s Debris is quickly becoming my favorite new show. The premise is that an alien ship has had some sort of near-Earth collision that sent debris from the wreckage raining down on Earth which is causing all sorts of chaos on the planet’s surface, especially when humans get involved. Every government on the planet wants to find as much of the debris as possible to harness the technology and learn its secrets so of course, it becomes a sort of arms race with all sorts of espionage, spy games, and double-crossing going on across the planet. Well, more so than usual.

The US Government, in cooperation with the British Intelligence office MI 16, decides to establish a specific task force to investigate the scientific anomalies occurring at the sites where alien debris has landed, bringing aboard Federal Agent Bryan Beneventi and MI 16 Agent Finola Jones, both of which have experience working on mysterious cases of an outer space persuasion. In episode 1 there’s floating bodies, drained batteries, and our first look at parts of the alien detritus causing people to disappear and reappear in another place, episode 2 there’s clones,  and an unknown energy field that has boundary issues, and in episode 3 there’s disappearing kids, a portal to not just another dimension but to possibly several in some field in Ohio, and a looking glass that would put Alice In Wonderland to shame. It’s quite different from other shows in the style of first contact or X-Files and I really think most sci-fi fans, no matter what faction or genre they prefer, will enjoy this extremely appealing show. Debris airs on Mondays at 10/9 c.
