Mythic Quest Everlight Is The Robust Ray Of Hope We’ve Been Waiting For AND We Get Anthony Hopkins Diana Marsh, April 17, 2021April 17, 2021 All Hail The Queen And King (who are thankfully not related. What? Too soon?) Photo courtesy of Apple+ TV It’s been a shit year, no matter how you look at it but thankfully we’ve been gifted with Mythic Quest’s new, pre-season 2 release Everlight today and I don’t think anyone can say enough thoughtful, encouraging things about it. From scoring (I’m sure bribing was involved) Anthony Hopkins to read the beautiful intro, to the stunning visuals boosting a fun yet feisty storyline, Everlight is just a wonderful retreat from pandemic burnout and the bludgeoning news headlines that are nearly inescapable. Imagine this being your first day back at the office. Photo courtesy of Show Snob.com As a gift to the Mythic Quest employees on their first day back, Ian (Rob McElhenney) and Poppy (Charlotte Nicdao ) basically set up a small scale Ren fair in the office, complete with duels and sword fights with toy weapons that mimics a story Ian had written years ago about a village that was taken over by an evil shadow which robbed the inhabitants of their inner light of hope which could only be re-ignited by the Sword Of Light that was soundly stuck in an ancient tree and could only be removed by the bravest fighter in all the land (don’t worry there are plenty of sword/penis jokes to balance out the warm and fluffy.) Employees dressed in their best medieval costumes battle each other one one one for the honor of becoming the one true champion who saves the kingdom and drives out the eternal darkness. As the competition progresses, we start learning things like that Ian is setting up competitors for failure to prop up his chosen winner, Jo (Jessie Ennis ) is the personification of her bad guy character to an interesting yet concerning degree, and Brad from Monetization (Danny Pudi) can always be relied on to be a dick. At one point the King and Queen join the competition as warriors themselves and while in the heat of battle with the last remaining competitor, the landscape suddenly changes from the Mythic Quest office to a dark foreboding forest, all the character costumes morph into real medieval gear while the toy swords transform into weapons of war. The ensuing fight scene is epic, the kingdom is saved, and everyone has a wonderful time doing so. Perfect. The evil knight Brad from Monetization played by Danny Pudi The whole episode is just really well done from start to finish with no discernable plotholes or weird storyline jumps. It’s genuinely funny, entertaining, and something that old and new fans will thoroughly enjoy.
