Metal Life Reacts to Universal Pictures Cancellation of the Release of Thriller Movie THE HUNT

Terry Bunch, August 11, 2019August 11, 2019

Metal Life Reacts to Universal Pictures Cancellation of the Release of Thriller Movie THE HUNT

Regarding the cancellation of the release of THE HUNT, Universal Pictures stated the following:

“While Universal Pictures had already paused the marketing campaign for the hunt, after thoughtful consideration, the studio has decided to cancel our plans to release the film. we stand by our filmmakers and will continue to distribute films in partnership with bold and visionary creators, like those associated with this satirical social thriller, but we understand that now is not the right time to release this film.”

Metal Life Magazine reaction to this announcement:

This cancellation is a response to recent mass shooting events in Texas and Ohio. While the Metal Life staff understand the concern that Universal Studios has regarding public opinion on this issue, we fear this type of reaction further fuels the debate about violent content breeding violence. This type of thought process affects video games, music, movies, TV, books, etc. Heavy metal has especially been blamed on countless occasions for being the cause of violent behavior.

The Metal Life staff feel that if a person decides to act violently in real life because they saw it in a movie, or heard it in a song, then there are serious mental issues at play. The Metal Life staff in no way means any disrespect to Universal Studios, the friends and families of the victims nor the friends and families of the shooters (who are obviously affected as well). We simply wanted to state our concern about the dangers of accepting the “exposure to violent imagery creates violent people” opinion. We feel that if that were unilaterally true, every Grand Theft Auto, Fortnite, etc player; every heavy metal fan; every horror movie fan; every Stephen King fan and fans of similar pop culture elements would all be rampaging violently in the streets. As we all know, this is simply not true.

Synopsis of The Hunt:

Twelve strangers wake up in a clearing. They don’t know where they are, or how they got there. They don’t know they’ve been chosen… for a very specific purpose … The Hunt. In the shadow of a dark internet conspiracy theory, a bunch of elites gathers for the very first time at a remote Manor House to hunt humans for sport. But the elites’ master plan is about to be derailed because one of the hunted, Crystal (Betty Gilpin, GLOW), knows The Hunters’ game better than they do. She turns the tables on the killers, picking them off, one by one, as she makes her way toward the mysterious woman (two-time Oscar® winner Hilary Swank) at the center of it all.
