Pop Culture For Metalheads

If You’re Not Watching Invincible On Amazon Prime Well Then Clear Your Damn Schedule

Amazon's "Invincible" Brings Robert Kirkman's Violent Take on Superheroes to the Screen Next Month [Trailer] - Bloody DisgustingIn episode 5 “That Actually Hurt” revenge is the name of the game. Photo courtesy of Bloody Disgusting.

Amazon’s Invincible has been an intense episodic journey of brutal and bloody proportions but the most recent “That Actually Hurt” was all of that and more. You’ve got poor Mark (voiced by Steven Yeun) who’s basically becoming a teenage modern-day savior in training trying to rescue the city (and on occasion the world) from the forces of evil and nature while endeavoring to maintain his school/girlfriend/work/life balance and it’s not going so well. Training sessions with Nolan (voiced by J.K. Simmons) are also bringing out a very dark, competitive, and selfish side to his father that Mark didn’t know existed, and his mother Debbie (voiced by Sandra Oh), thanks to Damien Darkblood (who’s now back in Hell thanks to Cecil,) now has evidence that Nolan killed the original guardians, which is really making life awkward and uneasy for everyone but only she knows why.

However, in the middle of all the chaos, an opportunity opens up for Mark to help out a struggling villain named Titan (from episode 1 voiced by Mahershala Ali )who wants to break up with his boss Machine Head (voiced by Jeffrey Donovan) and go straight but as you can probably guess from the top photo, it didn’t go so well. The new Guardians stop by to help save the day but they are equally beaten back, badly, largely in part to the unstoppable Battle Beast (voiced by Michael Dorn ) who is an absolute unit and bored with everyone’s shit. While the battle rages on, Nolan can be seen looking on just outside the building, fully aware of what’s going on inside and it raises a lot of questions. Did he leave Mark in there to die or to just teach him a lesson about listening to his father since Nolan told him not to be a hero this time? Was he hoping that the new Guardians would be taken out so he didn’t have to murder them too?  We also see the beginning of the rise of Titan as a boss villain, will Battle Beast be a part of his empire? We’ll find out soon enough but until then, damn.

Oh and let’s not forget about the pink, mind-altering alien mob on Mars that’s now assembled as one and about to take over the Universe and the creepy Egyptian bad guy that has been resurrected to bring pain and destruction to planet Earth because that’s what they do.

Episode 6 airs Friday, April 16th on Amazon but all previous episodes can be streamed right here
