Decal’s Sci-Fi Movie I’m Totally Fine Has Laughs, Loss, Grief, And A Lot Of Heart Diana Marsh, November 14, 2022 Starring Jillian Bell, Natalie Morales, and Blake Anderson I’m Totally Fine centers around Jennifer (Bell) who has recently lost her best friend and business partner Vanessa (Morales), and now must figure out how to go on without her. Before Vanessa’s death, a party had been planned at a rental house on the outskirts of town to celebrate the distribution deal Jennifer and Vanessa secured for their product. Still, instead of continuing on with the party, Jessica decides to stay at the rental for a few days to think and grieve. However in all the turmoil of losing Vanessa Jessica forgets to cancel the party and per the contract, the planner legally HAS to throw the party, or at least just set everything up. After that, Jessica decides to throw herself a little party consisting of Zanex and Champaign that evening and when she wakes up she finds Vanessa standing in the rental’s kitchen, except it’s not actually Vanessa but an extraterrestrial who has been sent to study human behavior on Earth and Jessica ended up being chosen as the object of research by top aliens on alien Vanessa’s home planet for reasons only said top aliens know. Vanessa alien looks exactly like the human one, sounds like her (well as best it could) and it even has all of her memories which is pure agony for Jessica, who, once she is finally convinced that Vanessa the alien is real, projects all of her thoughts, feelings, and past experiences with the real Vanessa onto the alien one. Here’s and here’s where it gets a bit sideways for me because it’s never revealed why Jessica was chosen, how alien Vanessa has all of the real ones’ memories or if the timing for the visit was intentional. Also, why didn’t anyone care enough to ask the alien what its name was so Jessica could separate alien V from dead V? Throughout the next 2 days, Alien V tries to study all the physical and emotional aspects of the human known as Jessica, and between Jessica’s meltdowns and then bonding moments with alien V over other party-related things she forgot to cancel the two do forge a friendship but it’s still based on Jessica’s inability to separate the V’s and when alien V finishes her work and reminds Jessica that she (alien V) will be leaving that evening, Jessica has another meltdown and tries to make alien V stay. Of course, alien V can’t but before she is picked up by an awaiting ship, Jessica finally accepts that the real Vanessa will never come back but the experiences alien V and her shared were very real and something that she never wants to forget. It’s a sad but sweet ending and puts Jessica on the right path to begin healing. The movie overall was good. The cinematography was beautiful and the actors were really solid there were just a few unanswered questions that if answered could have taken things up a bit but I still would definitely recommend giving this movie a watch.
