Comedian Jo Firestone’s New Special Good Timing Redefines Age Appropriate Humor Diana Marsh, October 15, 2021 So what did you do during lock-down? These spry seniors learned comedy and made 2021 a bit brighter for everyone. Photo courtesy of Paste Magazine. Created by comedian Jo Firestone, Good Timing is a wonderful break from all the noise and drama that is 2021. In a nutshell, the show centers around a group of NYC seniors who had signed up for an online comedy class back in 2020 (taught by Jo) who then finally meet up in person circa 2021 at a comedy workshop (also taught by Jo) where they all learn how to put together their own 3-4 minute comedy set to be performed later on that same week in front of a live audience. The special opens with the workshop in progress where we get to listen in on all the awkward jokes, failed one-liners, and impromptu bawdy poems a person could ask for, delivered with a confidence that belies the budding comic’s inexperience. As the workshop progresses, cutaways begin to take us from the class to a bare stage where Jo conducts quick but fun interviews of each of her thespians of humor, giving viewers a glimpse into the lives and backstories of each participant. Their responses are varied and unique but none are less than inspiring. Once the workshop is over, the group gets a few days off to prepare for the main event; a 2:00 pm show in front of a live and willing audience. The ensuing comedy show is entertaining, inappropriate, and as heartwarming as it gets.
