TSO Trans-Siberian Orchestra review Stuttgart Germany

These days Jon Oliva and Paul O’Neill are touring with their legendary Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s “Tales Of Winter” show through Europe. One of the first stops was Stuttgart/Germany … and they played a hell of a show. In an inferno of light and lasers, they presented a best-of from their previous rock-operas “Beethoven’s Last Night”, “Night Castle”, “Christmas Eve & Other Stories”, “The Christmas Attic” and “The Lost Christmas Eve”. Due to this, it was less of an opera and more of a symphonic-rock revue (with undeniable influences of pop and musicals). The absence of a story-arc didn’t affect the power of the songs, however.

Oliva and a couple of his Savatage-fellows rocked the show, guarded by a string-orchestra and the usual bunch of tremendously good singers (mainly stars of hit musicals). They formed the chorus and alternated for the solo-parts. My personal highlight here was Kayla Reeves (check her out at kaylareeves.com) – although she only performed two songs, I kept her unique energetic voice in my mind throughout the show. Usually she does musicals and blues but yeah … she can also rock!

Within the two and a half hours of show I enjoyed most those parts when TSO played the classics like Beethoven, Mozart, Grieg and Orff in their modern metal way. Metal-fans might have wished for some more Savatage in the program, but for most in the audience, it was an absolutely enjoyable evening!
