Movie Review: Prisoners
Crime dramas that deal with kidnapping are a difficult genre to do anything particularly new, innovative, or mind blowing with. We’ve seen so many different versions of this that the cliches of the mystery story perpetually lie in the back of our minds as we follow the filmmakers progression through the story. We know what to look for in terms of misdirection and recognize cinematic slight of hand as we engage with the story and try to solve the classic “who dunnit” before the film reveals it to us. The filmmaker is tasked with not only developing an interesting and well composed story, but also takes on the challenge of trying to misdirect an audience already well versed in said misdirection in order to produce an ending that will shock and surprise an audience that didn’t see it coming.
