Metal Life interviews Dylan Postl for Leprechaun Origins at SDCC
Metal Life Magazine editor Terry Bunch interviewed WWE Superstar Dylan “Hornswoggle” Postl and star of Leprechaun: Origins at San Diego Comic Con 2014. Now we know what you’re going say… “another Leprechaun movie!!?!” But rest assured, this time they went for all out horror movie and no tongue-in-cheek punny humor.
Leprechaun: Origins director Zach Lipovsky had this to say
“The first reaction that most people have to the idea of a killer leprechaun is to laugh, and indeed I can see why. A little green man with silly shoes and a hat is anything but threatening so when I looked at the challenge of making a horror film that was legitimately scary, I took a fresh perspective.
It was clear that the mythology needed to be re-imagined, while still keeping the iconic elements intact. After asking myself ‘Who was the creature that the ancient Celtics met in a dark cave two thousand years ago?’, I set out to create a creature that shares many characteristics of a leprechaun, but is still freaky.
That gave me the freedom to develop an origin story that steered away from the comical tone of the original franchise. My line of thinking was ‘What would Guillermo do?’ so I went for a dark mythical horror tone. I created a naked creature from deep underground that feeds on gold in the rocks along with the blood of any human that comes too close.
I relish the idea that an audience member may begin the film expecting a light comedy, and leaves dreadfully traumatized. Ultimately, I hope audiences will find delight in discovering this new twisted take on a leprechaun horror film.”
Backpacking through the lush Irish countryside, two unsuspecting young couples discover a town’s chilling secret. Ben (Dunbar), Sophie (Bennet), David (Fletcher) and Jeni (Roxburgh) quickly discover the idyllic land is not what it appears to be when the town’s residents offer the hikers an old cabin at the edge of the woods. Soon, the friends will find that one of Ireland’s most famous legends is a terrifying reality.
