DAVE GROHL Dishes Praise On New Early Tad/Nirvana/Mudhoney Photo Book
Dave Grohl Praises Sub Pop Cofounder Bruce Pavitt’s New Book
EXPERIENCING NIRVANA: Grunge in Europe, 1989
“The Book Is Awesome, and So Perfectly Representative of That Time”;
Glorious Early Success of Seattle Bands Nirvana, Tad, and Mudhoney
Musician and filmmaker Dave Grohl is beating the drums in support of Sub Pop Records cofounder Bruce Pavitt‘s much-touted debut book EXPERIENCING NIRVANA: Grunge in Europe, 1989. This eight-day “microhistory” was created by Pavitt in 1989 as he joined his Seattle label’s underdog alternative rock bands Nirvana, Tad, and Mudhoney on tour for the first time across Italy, Switzerland, France, and England.
Says Grohl, who joined Nirvana months after the period covered in the book:
“The book is amazing, and so perfectly representative of that time. I swear, looking through those pictures brought me right back to being in a cold, damp van with a bunch of smelly musicians, having the time of our lives!”
Sub Pop luminaries including Tad Doyle of Tad, Mark Arm of Mudhoney (fresh from a stadium tour with Pearl Jam), and photographer Charles Peterson convened at the Fantagraphics Store in Seattle on Saturday night to mark the book’s launch. As reported in the Seattle Times, Pavitt: “did make some brief remarks, at one point referring to Tad and Nirvana as being the real heroes of his book, for touring around Europe in less than ideal conditions, packed side by side in a van for six weeks.”
